LISOF(London International School Of Fashion) made a mini documentary on some of their ex-students that have made it successful in the fashion industry, and yesss, Roman is also featured. Lets see how much fun he had during the insert:
As a designer who hardly ever designs according to the brief, Roman has decided to go abit extreme in this next collection. He was one of the 6 designers in Africa which were selected by Marvel Africa, along with SA Fashion Week to showcase a collection and pay tribute to the Super-Hero team of Avengers characters.
What Roman decided to do this time around is to use some alternative fabrics from the norm, i.e acoustic crepe, outdoor foil, speaker cloth, industrial mesh etc. to create these Avengers-inspired pieces.
Sculpting the garments into 3-Dimensional silhouettes was emphasized into this collection. The colour palette that Roman chose was a selection of fluorescent colours, giving it that very loud appearance on the exterior.
Lots of unusual texturing and intricate conceptional silhouettes are used. And the rest is the obvious: Lots of unusual shaped and textured garments - so “ROMANHANDT”
DNA is an experimental piece of research that aim to link the diverse
attitudes that exist within the citizens of Johannesburg. unalike
new creatives co-designed individual garments to propose a state-of
the-art look that is pioneering the way the contemporary male is
perceived. It is a reaction of the visionary DNA that unites man.
ENTROPY invokes a metaphoric journey into structured chaos, introducing new possibilities through radically engineered compositions of shape and sound. The interplay of surface faceting and texturing extends thenatural confines of the body, creating shape and form which negotiates the spaces between skin and cloth, symbolically contesting the notion of fixed masculine identities and blurringgender binaries. This project envisioned as a commentary on eclectic, liminal identities, presents a collection which playfully deconstructsthe hegemonic power embodied in the suit, and transforms thisstereotypical uniform into a parody of hypermasculinity and hypermuscularity
As previously published, our A/W ‘13 range is based on the notion of uniform dressing and how “staple” garments can be styled and worn in different ways to create completely new looks.
To demonstrate this new way of dressing, we created one version of four core pieces, namely a SHIRT, a VEST, a HOODIE and a pair of PANTS and styled each one in different ways to create 12 unique looks.
That means that in some cases a shirt was worn as a pair of pants, a pair of pants was converted into a jacket, etc.
But, how is this possible?
We designed and developed the pieces to be effortless, transitional garments through the use of smart and functional detailing, such as hidden belt loops, press stud side seams and extended zips. This collection isn’t about gimmicks and having to buy two of everything to make it work. This is about smart, functional design and utilising the pieces you have, along with your style and creativity, to create new and exciting looks.

About two weeks ago, we had the pleasure of being interviewed by the lovely Noor-Jehan Badat and photographed by the awesome Timothy Bernard for a profile in The Star.
Well, it came out on Thursday and is now available online for you to read all about Roman, his story thus far and what he has in store for the coming chapters:
